So what?

Big question

What is God's big story?

1 / 16

By the end, kids can

  • Tell God's big story in four parts: God made us, sin trapped us, Jesus died to buy us back, and one day he'll make everything new.
  • Explain a ransom as the price that sets a captive free, and know that Jesus paid it with his life.
  • Start learning the memory verse: Romans 5:8 (grades 3–4: John 8:36; grade 5+: Romans 6:23).

You'll need

  • This part's one-page worksheet for each child's level (grades 1–2, 3–4, or 5), handed out at the start
  • Pencils
  • A screen with sound and internet: the clips come from the Sunday school video “God's Big Story”

Presenting

Each part opens with a ▶ Watch slide that plays a clip of the 3-minute video “God's Big Story for Kids: Creation, Fall, Redemption, Restoration (Jesus Died for Us)” right on the slide: read the two questions, then click (or press →, or use a clicker) to play the clip. The slides wait while it plays and stops by itself; click twice to stop it early. Then click to show the answers. The clips need an internet connection.

Click the slide, or press → or Space (a clicker works too), to show the next thing; ← goes back, even while a clip plays. F presents full screen (Esc leaves it). P opens the presenter view, a second window with your notes, the next slide, and a timer, that moves with the slides: put it on your laptop and the slides on the projector. N shows the notes under the slides.

Your script

  1. So what?

Say: We've looked at a universe that began, promises kept, a real man, and an empty tomb. This chapter asks: so what? If Jesus rose, why did he have to die first? And what does it have to do with me?

Say: We'll take it in three parts, one short video each. Today is Part 1: the Bible's big story, from beginning to end.

  2. What's the story?

Ask: What's your favorite story? What goes wrong in it, and who comes to the rescue?

Say: The Bible is a lot of books, but it tells one story, with a problem and a rescue. Let's find out what they are.

Clicks: 1. the line “The whole Bible tells one big story. Today we'll watch it from beginning to end.”

    Sources: Genesis 1:1 · Revelation 21:1–5

  3. Memory verse

Do: Read it together three times. Then add motions: “God demonstrates his own love for us” (hug yourself), “while we were still sinners” (cover your face with your hands), “Christ died for us” (stretch your arms wide).

Say: God didn't wait for us to be good first. He loved us while we were still doing wrong. We'll say it in all three parts of this chapter, so by Part 3 you'll know it.

Older kids: Grades 3–4 learn John 8:36 and grade 5+ learns Romans 6:23. They're on their worksheets.

  4. Made and trapped · Watch: Made, then trapped

Say: The story starts in a garden.

Do: Read the two questions out loud, then click to play the clip. It's under a minute and stops by itself.

Ask after: What did God say about what he made? What is sin like? Click once for each answer.

Prepare: Before class, watch the video lesson this clip comes from, with every source written out: “What is the Bible's big story?”

Clicks: 1. play the clip (it stops by itself) · 2. the answer to 1: “It was very good.” · 3. the answer to 2: A chain. Jesus said, “everyone who sins is a slave to sin.”

    Sources: Genesis 1:26–31 · Genesis 3:1–13 · John 8:31–36 · Psalm 49:7–9

  5. We were captives

Say: We were made to know God, to love him, and to walk with him, free. But sin doesn't just make us guilty. It holds on to us. Jesus said, “Everyone who sins is a slave to sin.”

Say: We couldn't break the chains, and we couldn't buy our way out. A psalm says, “no payment is ever enough.”

Ask: Has anyone here never done anything wrong? (No one. “All have sinned.”)

Clicks: 1. the line ““For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” And we couldn't break the chains ourselves.”

    Sources: Romans 3:23 · John 8:34 · Psalm 49:7–9

  6. The rescue · Watch: A promise and a ransom

Say: But God made a promise, right there in the garden. Watch who keeps it.

Do: Read the two questions out loud, then click to play the clip. It's about a minute.

Ask after: What's a ransom? What did Jesus pay? Click once for each answer.

Prepare: Before class, watch the video lesson this clip comes from, with every source written out: “What is the Bible's big story?”

Clicks: 1. play the clip (it stops by itself) · 2. the answer to 1: The price you pay to set a prisoner free. · 3. the answer to 2: His own life. Peter says we were redeemed “with the precious blood of Christ.”

    Sources: Genesis 3:14–15 · Mark 10:32–45 · Leviticus 25:47–49 · 1 Peter 1:18–19 · Acts 2:22–32 · Hebrews 2:14–15

  7. Bought back

Say: God told the serpent, “he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” The serpent would hurt him, but he would win.

Say: In Israel, if someone was sold as a slave, a family member could pay to buy them back. God's law said, “One of their relatives may redeem them.” That's what redeem means. Jesus became one of us, part of our family, so he could redeem us. And on the third day God raised him, “because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.”

Ask: Who was the child God promised? (Jesus.) What did he pay? (His own life.)

Clicks: 1. the line “Jesus said he came “to give his life as a ransom for many.””

    Sources: Genesis 3:15 · Mark 10:45 · Leviticus 25:47–49 · Acts 2:24

  8. Made new · Watch: Made new

Say: The story isn't over at the empty tomb. Watch how it ends.

Do: Read the two questions out loud, then click to play the clip. It's under a minute, and it stops before the video's own invitation (the lesson's comes at the end).

Ask after: How free are we when the Son sets us free? What will God do one day? Click once for each answer.

Prepare: Before class, watch the video lesson this clip comes from, with every source written out: “What is the Bible's big story?”

Clicks: 1. play the clip (it stops by itself) · 2. the answer to 1: “You will be free indeed.” · 3. the answer to 2: Make everything new. “There will be no more death.”

    Sources: John 8:31–36 · Titus 3:4–7 · Romans 8:18–23 · Revelation 21:1–5 · 1 Corinthians 6:19–20

  9. Free indeed

Say: Remember the chain? Jesus said, “Everyone who sins is a slave to sin.” Then he said, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” The cross doesn't only take away our guilt. It breaks sin's hold on us.

Say: Jesus is our Lord and our Savior, so we follow him, and the Spirit helps us learn God's Word and obey it.

Ask: If someone sets you free from a prison, do you walk back in and lock the door? (No! You walk out into the light.)

Clicks: 1. the line “His Holy Spirit makes us new on the inside. And one day God will make the whole world new.”

    Sources: John 8:31–36 · Titus 3:4–7 · Revelation 21:1–5

  10. God's big story

Say: That's God's big story: God made us. Sin trapped us. Jesus died to buy us back. And one day he'll make the whole world new.

  14. Talk and pray

Do: Talk about one or two of the questions, then pray together. Kids can repeat the prayer one line at a time.
