Chapter 5, Part 3: What is faith?
So what? · Lesson 3 of 3 · About 28 minutes · Grades 1–5
By the end, kids can
- Know what faith is: trust in Jesus as King, and staying loyal to him, not just believing that God exists.
- Know that we can't earn our rescue: we're saved by grace, and good works grow from it.
- Know what Jesus asks of us, “Repent and believe the good news,” and how to come back when we stumble.
- Say the memory verse from memory: Romans 5:8 (grades 3–4: John 8:36; grade 5+: Romans 6:23).
You'll need

- Pencils and crayons
- A screen with sound and internet: the clips come from the video “What Is Faith?”

So what?
Say: Part 1 was God's big story. Part 2 was the ransom Jesus paid. Today is Part 3: Jesus asks us to believe in him. So what is faith?
Would you trust it?
Ask: If you were climbing a wall, would it be enough to believe the rope exists? (No. You'd have to hold on and put your weight on it.)
Say: The Bible says even the demons believe God exists. So faith must be more than that. Let's find out what.

Remember our verse?
Do: Say it together with the motions. Then click to show each missing word as kids call it out. This time there are four.
Answers: love, sinners, Christ, died (the same words as the grades 1–2 sheet).
Clicks: 1. the missing word “love” · 2. the missing word “sinners” · 3. the missing word “Christ” · 4. the missing word “died”
Faith · Watch: What is faith?
Say: Watch for a golden thread. It shows up whenever faith does.
Do: Read the two questions out loud, then click to play the clip. It's about 1½ minutes.
Ask after: Is believing God exists enough? What does pistis mean? Click once for each answer.
Prepare: Before class, watch the video lesson this clip comes from, with every source written out: “What is faith?”
Clicks: 1. play the clip (it stops by itself) · 2. the answer to 1: No. Believing that God exists isn't the faith that saves. · 3. the answer to 2: Trust you place in someone, and faithfulness you keep with them.

Trust, kept
Say: In English we have two words, faith and faithfulness. Greek uses one word for both. It's a relationship, not just an opinion: trust going out, faithfulness coming back.
Say: God doesn't ask for our trust without giving us a reason. In Athens, Paul said God “has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.” The empty tomb is his evidence.
Ask: Who is someone you trust? How do they show they're faithful to you?
Clicks: 1. the line “God keeps faith with us, and he gave us a reason to trust him: he raised Jesus from the dead.”
Sources: πίστις (pistis), Strong's G4102 · Romans 3:3 · Acts 17:31
The King · Watch: Whose side are you on?
Say: Long before Jesus, kings used this same word. Watch what they meant by it.
Do: Read the two questions out loud, then click to play the clip. It's about 1 minute.
Ask after: What was the king asking? What's the English word? Click once for each answer.
Prepare: Before class, watch the video lesson this clip comes from, with every source written out: “What is faith?”

Jesus is the King
Say: Paul's good news is about a King: God's Son, “appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.” Messiah means the anointed King.
Say: So faith in Jesus means three things together: believing the good news about the King, telling him you're on his side, and living like it.
Ask: If Jesus is the King, what does it mean to be on his side?
Clicks: 1. the line “Peter said, “God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.””
Sources: Romans 1:1–5 · Acts 2:36
Followers · Watch: Followers, not fans
Say: Here's something strange in John's Gospel. People believed in Jesus, and he didn't trust them back. Watch why.
Do: Read the two questions out loud, then click to play the clip. It's under a minute.
Ask after: What did Jesus do? Who will enter the kingdom? Click once for each answer.
Prepare: Before class, watch the video lesson this clip comes from, with every source written out: “What is faith?”
Clicks: 1. play the clip (it stops by itself) · 2. the answer to 1: He would not entrust himself to them. They were impressed; he wanted followers. · 3. the answer to 2: “The one who does the will of my Father.”

Repent and believe
Do: Have everyone stand, walk two steps one way, then turn all the way around and walk back. Say: That's what repent means: turning around.
Say: Jesus's first words of preaching were, “Repent and believe the good news!” Turn from your old masters. Trust him, and give him your loyalty.
Worksheet: Grades 3–4 match each word to what it means now.
Worksheet answers: Grades 3–4, Know the words: 1-C · 2-D · 3-A · 4-B
Clicks: 1. the line “To believe is to trust Jesus as King, and to stay with him.”

Going deeper · Grades 3–5 · Watch: Isn't that earning it?
Say: If faith means staying loyal to Jesus, does that mean we earn our way? Paul answers.
Do: Read the two questions out loud, then click to play the clip. It's under a minute.
Ask after: Is faith how we pay? Where do good works come from? Click once for each answer.
Prepare: Before class, watch the video lesson this clip comes from, with every source written out: “What is faith?”
Clicks: 1. play the clip (it stops by itself) · 2. the answer to 1: No. “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith… not by works.” Jesus paid. · 3. the answer to 2: They grow from grace. “We are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works.”

Wages or a gift?
Ask: What's the difference between wages and a gift? (Wages are paid for work. A gift is free.)
Say: Sin pays wages, and they end in death. Eternal life is a gift. Nobody can earn it. Jesus paid for it, and we receive it by coming over to his side.

Worksheet answers: Grade 5+, Think it through: Answers will vary. Look for: 1. saving faith trusts and follows Jesus, not just facts · 2. loyalty: whose side you were on · 3. no; we're saved by grace, and Jesus paid · 4. trusting Jesus as King and staying loyal

True or false?
Do: Read each one and have kids stand up for true and sit down for false. Click to stamp each answer.
Answers: 1. False. 2. True. 3. False: “it is by grace you have been saved… not by works.” 4. True: “God has made this Jesus… both Lord and Messiah.”

Come to him
Say: Following Jesus starts with talking to him. Tell him you believe. Turn from what you know is wrong, and ask him to forgive you. Then keep following him with other Christians, at church and at home.
Say: Following Jesus doesn't mean you'll never do wrong again. When you do, don't hide it. Tell him, and turn back. John wrote, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
Do: Give everyone a quiet minute. No one has to say anything out loud. If a child wants to talk about following Jesus, talk with them afterward and let their parents know.
