Presenting
Each clue opens with a ▶ Watch slide that plays its part of the 7-minute Chapter 5 video right on the slide: read the two questions, then click (or press →, or use a clicker) to play the clip. The slides wait while it plays and stops by itself; click twice to stop it early. Then click to show the answers. The clips need an internet connection.
Click the slide, or press → or Space (a clicker works too), to show the next thing; ← goes back, even while a clip plays. F presents full screen (Esc leaves it). P opens the presenter view, a second window with your notes, the next slide, and a timer, that moves with the slides: put it on your laptop and the slides on the projector. N shows the notes under the slides.

So what?
Say: We've looked at a universe that began, promises kept, a real man, and an empty tomb. Today's question: so what? If Jesus rose, why did he have to die first? And what does it have to do with me?
Who could pay?
Ask: If you were stuck somewhere and couldn't get out by yourself, what would you need? (Someone to come and get you.)
Say: In the law of Moses, “one of their relatives may redeem them”: pay the price to set them free. Remember that word: ransom. It's the key to today.
Clicks: 1. the line “God's law said a relative could pay the price to buy him back. That price is called a ransom.”

Memory verse
Do: Read it together three times. Then add motions: “God demonstrates his own love for us” (hug yourself), “while we were still sinners” (cover your face with your hands), “Christ died for us” (stretch your arms wide).
Say: God didn't wait for us to be good first. He loved us while we were still doing wrong.
Older kids: Grades 3–4 learn Mark 10:45 and grade 5 learns Romans 6:23. Both are on their worksheets.

We were captives
Say: The Greek word for sin was used of an arrow that misses the mark. All of us fall short.
Say: And sin doesn't just make us guilty. It holds on to us. Jesus said, “Everyone who sins is a slave to sin.” We can't free ourselves.
Ask: Has anyone here never done anything wrong? (No one. “All have sinned.”)
Clicks: 1. the line ““For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Like an arrow that misses the mark.”

Not silver or gold
Say: These are real silver coins from around Jesus's time. Silver like this was what people paid with. But Peter says we weren't bought back with silver or gold. Jesus paid with his own life.
Say: And he knew it was coming. In Mark's Gospel alone he tells his friends three times that he'll be killed, and after three days rise again.

The cross at the center
Say: On a wall near Rome's Palatine Hill, around AD 200, someone drew a man worshipping a crucified figure with a donkey's head. In the next room, a different hand wrote back: “Alexamenos is faithful.”
Say: The cross is where Jesus paid the ransom, and the empty tomb shows he won. Peter said, “It was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.”

Repent and believe
Do: Have everyone stand, walk two steps one way, then turn all the way around and walk back. Say: That's what repent means: turning around.
Say: Believing is trusting Jesus the way you trust a rope to hold you when you climb. You put your weight on it.
Say: Turning to God starts a whole new life. We don't follow him to earn his rescue. We follow him because he already paid for us: “You are not your own; you were bought at a price.”
Worksheet: Grades 3–4 look up the four verses on page 2 now.

Wages or a gift?
Ask: What's the difference between wages and a gift? (Wages are paid for work. A gift is free.)
Say: Sin pays wages, and they end in death. Eternal life is a gift. Nobody can earn it. Jesus paid for it.
Say: The first Christians taught it this way too. Around AD 180, Irenaeus, a bishop in what is now Lyon, in France, wrote that Christ, “redeeming us by His own blood… gave Himself as a redemption for those who had been led into captivity.”

Come to him
Say: Following Jesus starts with talking to him. Tell him you believe. Turn from what you know is wrong, and ask him to forgive you. Then keep following him with other Christians, at church and at home.
Do: Give everyone a quiet minute. No one has to say anything out loud. If a child wants to talk about following Jesus, talk with them afterward and let their parents know.
