The empty tomb

Big question

Did Jesus really come back to life?

1 / 19

By the end, kids can

  • Tell what happened from Friday to Sunday, and who saw Jesus alive.
  • Give reasons the first Christians' answer fits the facts: a real death, an empty tomb, witnesses nobody would invent, and frightened friends made fearless.
  • Say the memory verse: Matthew 28:6 (grades 3–4: John 11:25–26; grade 5: 1 Corinthians 15:3–4).

You'll need

  • The worksheet for each child's level (grades 1–2, 3–4, or 5), handed out at the start
  • Bibles for the look-ups (grades 3–4)
  • Pencils and crayons
  • A screen with sound and internet: each part plays its part of the Chapter 4 video

Presenting

Each clue opens with a ▶ Watch slide that plays its part of the 11-minute Chapter 4 video right on the slide: read the two questions, then click (or press →, or use a clicker) to play the clip. The slides wait while it plays and stops by itself; click twice to stop it early. Then click to show the answers. The clips need an internet connection.

Click the slide, or press → or Space (a clicker works too), to show the next thing; ← goes back, even while a clip plays. F presents full screen (Esc leaves it). Your script

  1. The empty tomb

Say: Last time we saw that Jesus was a real man, and that he said he was God. If that's true, everything rides on one question: did he rise from the dead?

Say: Today we'll go through the evidence, one piece at a time.

  2. What would it take?

Ask: If a friend told you someone came back from the dead, what would you say? What would you want to see?

Say: When the women told Jesus's friends the tomb was empty, Luke says “they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.” Something changed their minds. Let's find out what.

Clicks: 1. the line “Jesus's friends didn't, at first. Let's find out what changed their minds.”

    Sources: Luke 24:9–11

  3. Memory verse

Do: Read it together three times. Then add motions: “he is not here” (shake your head and point to the floor), “he has risen” (arms up high), “just as he said” (hand by your mouth, then a thumbs up).

Say: An angel said this to the women at the empty tomb. Jesus had told his friends he would rise, and he did.

Older kids: Grades 3–4 learn John 11:25–26 and grade 5 learns 1 Corinthians 15:3–4. Both are on their worksheets.

  4. Part 1 · Watch: Friday to Sunday

Say: Start on Friday. Watch what happens to Jesus's body, and who sees where it's laid.

Do: Read the two questions out loud, then click to play the clip. It's about 1½ minutes and stops by itself.

Ask after: Who laid Jesus in the tomb? What did the women find? Click once for each answer.

Clicks: 1. play the clip (it stops by itself) · 2. the answer to 1: Joseph of Arimathea. · 3. the answer to 2: The stone rolled away, and the tomb empty.

  5. The tomb was empty

Say: Jesus really died. Even Tacitus, a Roman who despised Christians, wrote that Christus “suffered the extreme penalty” under Pontius Pilate. And Pilate checked with the centurion that he was dead before he let Joseph have the body.

Say: This is a real tomb in Jerusalem from around that time, with its great round stone. Two women watched where Jesus was laid. On Sunday they came back, and the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.

Worksheet: Grades 1–2 number the story in order on page 1 now.

Worksheet answers: Grades 1–2, Page 1: What happened first?: 1. Jesus died on the cross. 2. His friends laid him in a tomb. 3. The women found the tomb empty. 4. Jesus ate fish in front of his friends.

  6. Part 2 · Watch: Witnesses nobody would invent

Say: Notice who finds the tomb empty. It's not who you'd pick if you were making the story up.

Do: Read the two questions out loud, then click to play the clip. It's about 1½ minutes.

Ask after: Who found the tomb first? Who ran there next? Click once for each answer.

Ask: If you were making up a story, why wouldn't you pick witnesses nobody believed? (You'd only name them because that's what happened.)

Clicks: 1. play the clip (it stops by itself) · 2. the answer to 1: Women. In that world, a woman's word counted for little. · 3. the answer to 2: Peter and John. John got there first.

  8. Seen alive

Say: Thomas wanted proof: “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands… I will not believe.” A week later Jesus told him, “Put your finger here; see my hands.”

Say: And he wasn't a ghost. “Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones.” Then he ate a piece of fish in front of them.

Ask: Why would Paul say most of the 500 were still living? (So people could go and ask them.)

Say: Peter swore he never knew Jesus. Fifty days later he stood up in the same city and said, “God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.”

Say: The apostles were flogged and told to stop. They left rejoicing. And Paul, who had tried to destroy the church, spent the rest of his life preaching.

Ask: What could change scared people into brave ones like that? (They saw Jesus alive.)

Clicks: 1. the line “People don't suffer for a story they know they made up. They saw something.”

  11. What happened?

Say: Put the pieces together. A real death. A known tomb, found empty, by witnesses nobody would invent. Appearances to one man, to the Twelve, to 500 at once. Frightened friends turned fearless.

Say: The first Christians gave one answer that explains all of it: God raised Jesus from the dead.

Worksheet: Grades 1–2 help the women find the way to the tomb on page 2. Grades 3–4 look up the four verses on page 2.

  13. Going deeper · Grades 3–5 · Watch: Four easy answers

Say: People have tried four easy ways to explain all this: he didn't really die, they hallucinated, someone stole the body, or it's a legend that grew. Let's test them.

Do: Read the two questions out loud, then click to play the clip. It's about 2½ minutes.

Ask after: Why don't hallucinations fit? What did the guards' story give away? Click once for each answer.

Worksheet: Grade 5 matches each easy answer to the fact that sinks it on page 1 now.

    Worksheet answers: Grade 5, Page 1: Test the easy answers: 1-B · 2-C · 3-D · 4-A

  14. The skeptic brother

Say: Paul's list says Jesus appeared to James. The Jewish historian Josephus tells how the high priest “brought before them the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, whose name was James,” and had him stoned.

Ask: What would it take for you to believe your own brother was the Son of God?

Worksheet: Grade 5 answers the questions on page 2 now.

Worksheet answers: Grade 5, Page 2: Think it through: Answers will vary. Look for: 1. witnesses could still be asked 2. he saw Jesus alive 3. Jesus appeared to him 4. nobody dies for a lie they made up

  15. Do you believe this?

Say: Before any of this, when his friend Lazarus had died, Jesus told Lazarus's sister Martha: “I am the resurrection and the life.” Then he asked her, “Do you believe this?”

Say: If Jesus rose, then he was telling the truth, and death isn't the end for anyone who trusts him.

Say: Read one Gospel this week. Mark is the shortest. And ask God straight out: if you're real, show me.

Clicks: 1. the line “If he rose, death isn't the end. And he asks you what he asked her: “Do you believe this?””

    Sources: John 11:17–27

  16. Say it again

Do: Say the verse together, filling in the missing words. Then try it with eyes closed.
